American Indian Studies Department, Adjunct Professor classes include History of Native American Art,

California Native American Art, Introduction to Native American Studies and a plenary session speaker for

staff on Teaching with Objects. North County Higher Education Alliance grant recipient.

2003- PRESENT, POLITICAL APPOINTEE, STATE MUSEUM COMMISSIONER (CALNAGPRA)

State Commissioner for Museums, Sacramento, California

Appointed by the Governor of California to Commissioner and State Representative for museums,

California Native American Graves Protections and Repatriation Act.

2000  - 2002: SENIOR CURATOR

San Diego Museum of Man, San Diego California

Accountable for the Curatorial and Library/Research Department, including, updating and maintaining the

exhibit schedule, collections management and documentation issues. Supervised curatorial staff; including

six curators, two library staff and the registrar. Supervision included research, operations, staffing,

programming and budget within departments. Lecturer for adult programs related to exhibition content

and museum operations. Prepare department reports for the board of directors.

1998  - 2000: CHIEF CURATOR

San Diego Historical Society, San Diego, California

Accountable for the Curatorial and Exhibit Department including; historic preservation, interpretation,

historic maintenance, operations, budgets, inventory reports, collections management/documentation,

exhibit programming, and oversight for all four site locations; The Casa De Balboa (Headquarters), The

Villa Montezuma (Victorian Home), The Marston House (Arts and Crafts Museum) The Junipero Serra

Museum (In Presidio Park). Supervised curatorial, exhibit, special events and historic site staff; including

the registrar, curator of costumes and textiles, exhibits designer, curatorial assistant/historic site

operations, and the special events coordinator. Lectured for the public evening programs, as well as live

and taped televised programming relating to exhibitions, San Diego history, and collections management.

Key participant in the strategic planning process

1994 – 1998: CHIEF CURATOR

L.B.J. National Historic Park, National Park Service, Johnson City, Texas

Responsible for collections management including, preservation, documentation, registration

(accessioning, cataloging, loans) and conservation of the historical and fine art collections of over 10,000

objects and 5 historic sites located in Johnson City and Stonewall Texas. The principle contact for Mrs.

Lyndon Baines Johnson on the condition of the collections and the planning of future collection needs.

Responsible for Grant writing for Federal funds and successfully obtained over $100,000 in a period of

one year. Lecture for community programs within the central Texas region on collections management and

preserving your treasures.

1992 – 1994: MUSEUM REGISTRAR

United States Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C.

Produced and issued Interior Department Manual (411 DM) and accompanying 1200 page handbook under

auspices of a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Park Service and the Department of

the Interior. Responsible for drafting the Code Manual which outlines the policies and procedures for

Federal Museum Collections in documentation (accessioning, loans, purchasing, transfers, and exchanges,

cataloging) and collections preservation (storage, housing, handling, exhibit display, and transport).

Collaborations with representatives of all the Department bureaus developed Museum Property standards,

procedures and policy resulting in establishing Departmental policy and procedures for museum

management. Primary Instructor for training courses in the Department of the Interior, and the National

Park Service on Museum Property Management. Developed and instructed a variety of training courses

throughout the United States for various bureaus of the Department of the Interior. Audited and produced

on-site cultural/natural resource recommendations for Fish and Wildlife, National Park Service and Bureau

of Indian Affairs, Indian Arts and Crafts Board, Bureau of Land Management.

1990 – 1992: REGISTRAR

Smithsonian Institution, Anacostia Museum, Washington, D.C.

Established and implemented procedures, policies, and legal documents for all incoming and outgoing

loans, gifts, purchases, and temporary custodies. Wrote specifications and oversaw, the construction of a

climate controlled secure artifact storage building. Provide the annual Registrar’s Report submitted to the

Smithsonian Registrar for the Secretary of the Smithsonian. Principal advisor to the Director of the

Anacostia Museum, Smithsonian on matters relating to Museum Registration and Collection Management,

Member of Registrar and Collections Management Team Smithsonian Institution. Developed and Oversaw

student-training programs and lectured for local Anacostia High School, George Washington University,

and American University Internship Programs.

1989 – 1990: MUSEUM RESEARCH ANALYST

U.S. Department of Treasury, Washington D.C.

Designed and implemented a collection policy, accessioning system, preservation directives for period

rooms, established a system for monitoring and controlling proper climate conditions. Specified work and

procured bids for Conservators and Restorers on the conservation of Treasury furniture, decorative arts,

and architectural elements. Responsible for and oversaw the movement, and the official use, of Treasury

antique objects. Received awards in recognition of contribution to the development of the Treasury

Bicentennial Celebration attended by the President of the United States George Bush, Secretary of the

Treasury Nicolas Brady and the Preservation Committee Members. Lecturer for American University, and

George Washington University’s, Museum Studies Programs and Lecturer for the Secretary of the

Treasury’s visitors, Treasury Department visitors and dignitaries.

1986 – 1987: ACTING REGISTRAR, ASSISTANT REGISTRAR

Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, Los Angeles, California

Primary contact with the Russian Academy of Sciences in the initial stages of development for the

exhibition Crossroads to Eurasia, exhibited throughout the United States. Prepared Monthly and Annual

Donation Reports to the Board of Los Angeles County and the Museum Foundation Boards. Responsible for

documenting and handling all incoming and outgoing traveling exhibitions, loans, purchases, gifts, field

collections. Organized insurance coverage, condition reports, shipping, packing, and supervised the

installation and exhibition of incoming traveling exhibits. Participated in the development of the Discovery

Hall a children’s touch exhibit and educational center.

1983 – 1985: COLLECTIONS MANAGER, ASSISTANT REGISTRAR

Southwest Museum, Los Angeles, California. Compiled collection, and photographic data, accessioned,

stored photographed and condition reported all gifts, purchases, incoming and outgoing loans. Assisted

in the exhibition and installation of temporary exhibitions, such as; Eight Artist, Chas F. Lummis

Centennial Exhibition, The Art of Fritz Shoulder, Arctic Art, and the development of a Permanent California

and Southwest Gallery.
